SKILL BUILDER PROGRAM

WHAT IS STAINED GLASS ART?

A cold glass art operation using sheet glass cut into custom shapes and joined together via lead framework or copper foil then soldered together to make panels or 3D structures.

OUR STAINED GLASS INSTRUCTOR

Hello! My name is Nick Horak and I teach stained glass here at Visualise. Shortly before graduating UTK with a BA in Art focused on Printmaking and Art History, I happened upon a job opening as the lead artist/designer at a local stained glass shop. I applied, with absolutely no knowledge of the craft, and eight years later I still thoroughly enjoy doing it every day - I could talk on for hours. Come and take my classes instead! I hope to teach others what a wonderful art form stained glass can be, and show that anyone can learn it if you have a little patience and curiosity; it truly is a spectacular and unique art form.

4-6 WEEK FOIL CLASS:

* FLAT OBJECT FOIL CLASSES:

Learn how to make your own stained glass art from conception to completion! In this 4-6* week course, we will teach you how to draw a stained glass piece, choose and cut the glass, foil, solder, and finish it to completion. In this class we will focus on the copper foil technique pioneered by Tiffany Studios in the late 19th and early 20th century - very little has changed since then. Class will start with an intro project designed to teach students the ins and outs of creating a stained glass piece, and will then move on to each student creating a design of their very own! No prior experience required.

Materials for intro project provided. For the main project, students will be asked to visit sheet glass shops and pick what they like, it always results in the most fantastic and personal projects! Some glass will also be available at the studio.

* 3D OBJECT FOIL CLASSES:

Prior experience/flat foil class prerequisite recommended

Learn how to make your very own stained glass lampshade or lantern! In this class we will teach you how create your very own stained glass lampshade or lantern using the copper foil method pioneered by Tiffany Studios in the late 19th and early 20th century - very little has changed since then. For our first class we will create an introductory 3D project designed to teach students how working in the third dimension differs from flat pieces. We will then move to our larger project, working from conception to completion, with each student drawing their own custom piece. We will cut, grind, and foil each piece of stained glass and then assemble the final lampshade or lantern into a three dimensional object; after which we will patinate and clean the piece. And at the end of all of that hard work, students will be rewarded with a beautiful, unique, and one of a kind work of stained glass art of their very own. It is truly a wonderful craft, come learn it for yourself!
